South Dakota Board of Regents

New Baccalaureate Degree Minor

Note: Use this form to propose a new baccalaureate degree minor that requires either existing or new courses. An academic minor within a degree program enables a student to make an inquiry into a discipline or field of study beyond the major or to investigate a particular content theme. It too should be organized around a specific set of objectives that are achieved through a series of courses. Minors are intended to provide limited competency in the subject. Course offerings in a minor may be centered in a specific department or drawn from several departments as in the case of a topical or thematic focus.  Some specific requirements are included.  Regental undergraduate minors typically consist of 18-24 semester credit hours.  Flexibility typically is achieved by offering the student a choice from among a group of courses to complete the credits.  Minors are established by Board of Regents action. The Executive Director or the Board may request additional information concerning proposals.

1.  Do you have a major in this area?

Yes

X

No

We do not currently have an undergraduate degree program in this academic area, but we do offer a graduate degree in this area (M.S. Ed in educational technology).

2.  If you do not have a major in this area, explain how the proposed minor relates to your mission.

This minor relates to DSU’s mission to integrate technology into the teacher education programs.  DSU currently offers courses that lead to an educational technology endorsement.  To support the Governor’s 1:1 laptop initiative, DSU would like to expand the existing endorsement to a minor, with the additional coursework (beyond what’s required for an educational technology endorsement at DSU) focused on 1:1 computing in the K-12 classroom.

3.  How will the proposed minor benefit students?

The K-12 Educational Technology minor provides coursework to prepare our graduates to teach K-12 computer courses and also to effectively teach in a 1:1 computing environment.  As indicated above, the additional coursework focuses on 1:1 computing in the K-12 classroom.  While most of the courses already exist on campus, the content of the discipline-specific technology courses will focus more intently on 1:1 computing in the K-12 classroom.

5.  What is the rationale for the curriculum?

The additional coursework (moving from an endorsement to a minor) will give DSU teacher education graduates the additional technology skills needed to teach effectively in a 1:1 computing environment.

C. Elective Courses in the Minor: List courses that may be taken as electives in the minor. Indicate any new courses to be added specifically for the minor. (If the list of existing courses is long, it may be provided as Appendix A.)

            None

7.  What outcomes will be expected for all students who complete the minor?  How will these outcomes be achieved?

Upon completion, graduates will be certified to teach K-12 technology courses in K-12 schools in South Dakota and surrounding states.  They will also be better prepared to teach in a 1:1 computing environment.  There are no specific graduation requirements (exit exams, for example) for students who complete the coursework for a minor.

8.       What instructional technologies will be used to teach courses in the minor? This refers to the instructional technologies used to teach the new courses in the minor and NOT the technology applications students are expected to learn.

Only one new course is being added to the curriculum for this minor: ELED 422 Science/Math Technology (K-8).  The course will be delivered using the technology available to students because of DSU’s Wireless Mobile Computing Initiative: wireless computing, paperless classroom technologies and inking functions of the tablet.

9.  Is the University requesting authorization to provide the minor to students at an off-campus location or by distance delivery? If yes, explain.  If off-campus or distance delivery authorization is not requested, enter “None.”

None

10.  Costs, Budget & Resources: Explain the amount and source(s) of any one-time and continuing investments in personnel, professional development, release time, instructional technology and software, other O&M, facilities, etc needed to implement the minor.

None – since only one additional course is being added to the curriculum and that course will be taught by existing faculty.
